No Ni-Cad Batteries

No Nickel Cadmium Batteries

BD Batteries chooses not to sell any NI-CAD batteries. We do not feel that selling batteries with Cadmium in them is a responsible way to care for the community in which we exist. We choose to sell a limited number of flooded lead acid batteries based on custom orders, and predominantly sell UL Listed, Sealed, AGM Batteries that are far safer than flooded models.

WHY not Ni-CAD Batteries?
We feel that Cadmium, being 20 times more toxic than lead, is a bad basic metal for a battery in the first place. The fact that most NI-CAD batteries are not recycled further expands the discussion. Finally, Nickel Cadmium Batteries, being just as powerful as premium lead acid batteries, are roughly the same cost. Let’s discuss each of the three reasons below.

1. Per OSHA Cadmium is 24 times more critical to control than lead. We feel that Cadmium based batteries are just not something to distribute into the community because we care about the health of our neighbors.

CADMIUM: "Action level (AL)" is defined as an airborne concentration of cadmium of 2.5 micrograms per cubic meter of air (2.5 ug/m(3)), calculated as an 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA).

LEAD: "Action level" means employee exposure, without regard to the use of respirators, to an airborne concentration of lead of 30 micrograms per cubic meter of air (30 ug/m(3)) averaged over an 8-hour period.

2. Ni-Cad batteries are not very recyclable. The materials in the process are not very valuable, the process is expensive, and the resulting economics are negative. Therefore very few for profit businesses are in the venture. Generally the ni-cad recyclying is done by a few government sanctioned entities that are routinely inspected for all of our safety. Since these few recyclers don’t have the capacity to take all the Ni-Cad batteries currently on the market, many are simply thrown into the trash. This trash tends to end up in a landfill or an incinerator, and subsequently in the drinking water or air we breathe.

On the other hand, Lead acid batteries in the United States are recycled at a rate of 98 percent. Of those batteries recycled, 99% of the material is recovered, and reused in the next generation of batteries. By reusing the materials in this closed loop process, less than 2% additional material is required to produce a new battery. This cycle saves you the customer money, the landfill save space, production requires a reduced amount of power, and the lack of need for raw minerals saves the forest from turning into a new lead mine.

3. Per the FAA, Ni-Cad and Lead acid batteries are both qualified for aircraft applications, and the batteries are roughly the same size, weight, voltage, amp hour capacity, and lifespan. When you choose to use premium lead acid batteries, you too can expect this premium performace, akin to more dangerous Nickel Cadmium chemistry batteries. Crown flooded batteries, SunXtender Solar Batteries, Lifeline RV and Marine Batteries, and Chairman Wheelchair batteries all have test characteristics that rival ni-cad batteries, at lower cost. Flooded models are cheaper than AGM models, but require maintenance, or replacement which can outweigh the initial cost .

The jury is still out on Li-ion or lithium ion technology, but at this time the batteries are too expensive for most folks anyway. When this changes, expect to seem more here from us.
